APTelecom and FiberSense team up to deploy real-time subsea cable sensing technology worldwide
29 Apr 2026

Two firms are joining forces to bring real-time monitoring to the undersea cables that carry most of the world's internet traffic. APTelecom, a telecoms advisory group, and FiberSense, an Australian sensing company, announced in April 2026 that they would accelerate the commercial rollout of FiberSense's cable monitoring technology across international markets.
The technology, called DigitalMarine, works by converting existing fibre optic cables into continuous acoustic sensors. No new seabed hardware is required. The system can detect anchor drags, vessel intrusion, and unauthorised cable handling across thousands of kilometres. The company says false-positive alert rates run between one and three per cent.
APTelecom's role is largely commercial. The firm has shortened market entry timelines and opened access to senior decision-makers across the carrier and subsea sectors.
"In today's environment, with shifting global security dynamics and a growing focus on the security of critical infrastructure, the ability to monitor and protect subsea cables has become essential." - Sean Bergin, President and Co-Founder, APTelecom
"Their ability to open the right doors and guide market entry has been instrumental as we expand internationally." - Mark Englund, CEO and Founder, FiberSense
The partnership follows early deployments in Europe and the Pacific. It arrives at a moment of acute policy pressure. The United States and European Union are developing formal security frameworks for subsea infrastructure, making verified monitoring solutions a procurement priority for cable operators. Some 119 new submarine cable systems are expected to enter service globally this year, driven by demand from artificial intelligence and cloud computing.
Questions remain about how quickly regulators will formalise requirements, and whether smaller operators will have the resources to adopt new monitoring standards alongside the cost of deploying new cable capacity.
