One ROV, 30 Days, No Surfacing Required

Oceaneering's all-electric Momentum ROV can stay submerged for 30 days straight, a milestone that reshapes cable inspection and offshore work

For decades, the offshore ROV has had a hard ceiling. No matter how capable the vehicle, hydraulic systems dragged it back to the surface every one to three days for maintenance. Oceaneering's new Momentum Electric Work Class ROV just punched through that ceiling.

Unveiled at the Subsea Tieback Forum in New Orleans in March 2026, Momentum is rated for 30 continuous days of subsea deployment without surface recovery. No comparable hydraulic work-class platform comes close to that threshold. The distinction matters because extended campaigns mean fewer interruptions, lower vessel costs, and faster response to faults on critical infrastructure.

The key shift is architectural. Traditional hydraulic systems fail as a unit, forcing full recovery when anything goes wrong. Momentum's electric design isolates failed components at the source, so a single fault doesn't sink the whole mission. A fully digital, IP-based control layer streams live vehicle data to Oceaneering's onshore specialist centers in the US, UK, Brazil, and Norway, keeping expert eyes on operations from shore.

At the vehicle level, the design is built for versatility. Plug-and-play sensors, 360-degree vision, and high thrust capacity cover everything from drilling support to seabed surveys and subsea construction. Backward compatibility with Oceaneering's existing Millennium Plus infrastructure means operators can adopt Momentum incrementally rather than replacing entire fleets overnight.

However, the timing is deliberate. Subsea cables carry over 95% of global internet and AI traffic, and 119 new systems are entering service this year alone. Regulators in the US and EU are building formal resilience frameworks for undersea infrastructure, adding policy weight to what is already surging commercial demand. Momentum doesn't just offer better performance; it arrives precisely when the world most needs reliable tools to protect the cables holding the internet together.
